Thriving on a Riff

Commissioned in 2020 by Rosenstiel’s Fine Art Publisher, London,England as a Limited Edition of only 500, each book purchased in the US is accompanied by an original sketch by the artist, Marsha Hammel.

The book is a lively account of the artist’s life from the 1950s to the present illustrated with ‘vintage’ photographs, dozens of large full color plates and images from studios and places.

The title of the book “Thriving on a Riff” was inspired by the word “riff” which musicians use to refer to a repeated rhythmic or melodic phrase that forms an accompaniment to musical composition or improvisation. While not a musician herself, Marsha Hammel has always found inspiration for her artistic approach and painterly composition through listening to musicians.

This Limited Edition book is not available on Amazon and is represented exclusively in the US by the Gallery at Flat Rock.

The Artist

The gesture of line, the rhythm of forma and color, the wholeness of unified surface. Life and living are my inspiration - music, dance, people, places, and even plants and animals. Subjects that provide a mirror to ourselves.
